Job Summary

The Bankruptcy Legal Assistant is responsible for several aspects of the Bankruptcy process including, but not limited to: preparing, drafting and filing proof of claims across multiple states, understanding all aspects of the department Proof of Claim process including nuances of Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcies, work closely with attorneys and clients to assist in preparing other miscellaneous pleadings such as objections to confirmation, reviewing hearing results, order preparation, and other duties as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for preparing legal pleadings with the attorneys such as the Proof of Claims, Objections, Motions, and Responses.
    • Including but not limited to
      • Gathering information needed to prepare said legal pleadings.
      • Reviewing client provided financial histories and interpreting financial data.
      • Draft pre-petition payment histories and spreadsheets based on provided financial data.
      • Review client histories and ledgers for payment discrepancies.
  • Responsible for direct communication with clients and attorneys via all applicable means.
  • Responsible for Client website monitoring and updating
    • Including but not limited to
      • Updating clients with proper documentation and completion dates ensuring 100% accuracy.
      • Monitoring for approved pleadings.
      • Monitoring for requested documents and histories.

Education & Work Experience

  • A High School Diploma or GED required.  Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university preferred.
  • 1-3 years of related experience.

  • Must be extremely proficient in software tools including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook. Most notably excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Adaptable to change.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, or crouch The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Normal office working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
